US Cavalry model. At the end of the Civil War in 1865, the War Office had to replace the excellent muzzle-loading muskets with modern cartridge-fired weapons. So first Springfield VL muskets were converted and from 1868 the "Trapdoor Rifle" was built. After 3 years and some modifications the "Trapdoor Rifle" met all needs and was used until the war against Spain of 1898-1899.
