Historical outline:
The NRA set the weight of long-range firearms at a maximum of 10 lbs (4.536 kg). The heavy action of the 1874 Sharps rifles were fitted with thinner barrels, which resulted in undesirable barrel wobble and increased recoil. The solution to this problem came from Charles E. Overbaugh, sales manager for the Sharps Company. By downsizing and reducing the weight of the 1874 system, the 1877 model was created with a barrel suitable for competitions - but with the same mechanical properties as its predecessor.
The Sharps Overbough Long Range Competition has a machined, rifled barrel and is equipped with a leaf front sight and a military rear sight. The receiver already has the holes for mounting a diopter. The rifle has a "German engraver" and an oiled, checkered American walnut stock.
