Picatinny vs. Weaver profile - the most important differences
At first glance, rails with Picatinny and Weaver profiles look almost identical, as both use the same trapezoidal profile in their outer outline. The crucial difference lies in the width of the transverse grooves and their spacing.
Picatinny profile
The Picatinny rail profile is a profile rail strictly standardized according to MIL-STD-1913 (NATO: STANAG 2324). The transverse slots have a width of .206 inches (~5.23 mm) and a center-to-center distance between the slots of .394 inches (~10.01 mm). The rail is usually slotted along its entire length in the same grid pattern.
Weaver profile
Weaver rails are not standardized and vary depending on the manufacturer. The width of the cross slots is between .160 and .180 inches (approximately 4.06–4.57 mm) and is narrower than that of a Picatinny rail. The spacing between the slots varies even more. Often, slots are only located where mounting rings are typically intended.
What fits where?
Ideally, the appropriate mounting hardware should be used in each case. However, it is also possible to use other methods:
Weaver mount on Picatinny rail
The narrower crossbar of the Weaver mount fits easily into the wider slot of the Picatinny rail. Note: It may have minimal forward/backward play if it is not fully tightened against the stop. A Picatinny mount will not normally fit on a Weaver rail, as the wider crossbar does not fit into the narrow slot.
