Due to their clean workmanship and high reliability, the Mercury 870 repeating rifles are very popular. Different models with wooden and plastic stocks and different barrel designs are available. The action box on all models is made from a solid piece of chrome-nickel steel and the barrel is cold hammered. The locking takes place via two solid locking lugs directly in the chamber. The two-position sliding lock is located on the right side of the lock. The safety acts on the trigger and sear. It is a very safe system because the locking of the sear is particularly robust. And when the sear is locked, the firing pin is also locked. In theory, a safety that directly locks the firing pin is safer, but due to the small size of the components, these parts are often less robust. She works in two positions. When the slide is in the forward position, the rifle is ready to fire; this is indicated by a red dot. A white dot is displayed in the rear position. The rifle is now in the secured state. Depending on the version, the models have walnut stocks or modern plastic stocks, some even with a hole stock. The caliber range is from .222 rem to 9.3x62. There are hinged cover magazines available, which hold 4+1 or 5+1 shots depending on the caliber, or removable box magazines. The bolt handles protrude sufficiently far from the stock to enable rapid repeating at the stop.
